Elaine Gottschall created the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. The diet is successfully used to treat people with digestive disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis and Candidiasis.
The Basics of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a very strict plan that completely removes grains, lactose and sucrose. Dieters are advised to continue with the strict version of the diet for at least six months, and then reintroduce foods very carefully.
The diet consists of eating foods that contain no carbohydrates, or only simple carbohydrates, which consist of fructose and glucose.
Recommended Foods
Meat, poultry, oils, butter, homemade yogurt, most fruits such as apples, ripened bananas, mango, papaya, citrus, and peaches. Honey and stevia are the only allowed sweeteners.
Pros
- Consists of highly nutritious unprocessed foods
Cons
- A very strict plan that requires a great deal of determination
- To confirm the effectiveness of the diet, more studies are required
- Requires time to prepare foods
Conclusions
Simple carbohydrates and high-fat foods are to be restricted, if weight loss is a goal. To confirm the effectiveness of the diet, more studies are required.
