Dr. Arthur Agatston created the South Beach Diet plan. The diet was originally developed for overweight heart patients. The patients experienced good results in their health and also lost weight.
The diet starts with a restricted two-week induction phase, which produces a weight loss of about 8 to 13 pounds. Carbohydrates such as rice, pasta and breads are not allowed in this phase. The menu contains chicken, turkey, fish, nuts, eggs, salads, and vegetables.
In the second phase the weight loss is about 1-2 pounds per week, and it reintroduces some of the foods avoided in Phase One, but only in limited amounts.
The third phase consists of eating healthy foods and maintaining weight.
Summary
The diet is nutritionally good. Expensive food items can make the cost high. The diet contains the principles of eating in balance, little and often, and low-GI carbs.
