The USDA introduced the Food Guide Pyramid in 1992. It translates nutritional suggestions into the kinds and amounts of food to eat each day. It recommends foods from the five major food groups, from the three lower sections of the Pyramid. Foods in one group cannot be exchanged for those in another.
Foods, Oils and Sweets
The foods such as salad dressings and oils, cream, butter, soft drinks, candies, and sweet desserts are to be used sparingly by people.
Milk, Yogurt and Cheese
Protein foods from animals such as milk, yogurt, and cheese.
Meat, Poultry, Fish, Beans, Eggs, and Nuts
These are proteins including meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts.
Vegetables and Fruits
Many people eat these foods for vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
Breads, cereals, rice, and pasta
This group contains all foods from grains.
Conclusion
The Pyramid's recommendations lacks scientific proof and have changed very little over the years to reflect improvements in our understanding of diet and health.
