The Egg Diet became famous because of reports that some well-known people have lost weight by eating only eggs.

Basics of the Egg Diet

The Egg Diet has several versions that are available on the Internet. The most famous version of the diet does not consist of eating only eggs, but it involves getting the majority of your protein from eggs.

This diet is a variation of the Atkins Diet, in which the primary idea is to restrict the intake of carbohydrates. On this diet, you can eat two or more eggs for breakfast along with, low carbohydrate vegetables, grapefruit or lean protein.

Both lunch and dinner contain either eggs or a small amount of lean protein such as, chicken or fish. Carbohydrate foods such as, pasta, bread and potatoes are very limited. Fruits are limited to one to two servings daily. The dieters can eat salads and low carbohydrate vegetables as they desire.

There is another version of the diet, which is known as the Egg and Grapefruit Diet, and it contains eating one half grapefruit with each meal. The rest of the plan is the same as above.

Recommended Foods

Lean protein, low carbohydrate vegetables, eggs, and grapefruit.

Sample Diet Plan

Breakfast
2 Boiled eggs
½ Grapefruit

Lunch
Green salad
Roast chicken (without skin)

Dinner
2 Egg omelette with spinach and tomato

Exercise is not a requirement on this diet plan.

Pros

  • Eggs are a good source of protein and vitamins
  • High protein, low carbohydrate diets help in reducing the appetite
  • Rate of calorie burning increases with high protein diets

Cons

  • Possibility that weight will be regained when you return to normal eating
  • Not a healthy or balanced approach to eating
  • Removes many vegetables and entire food groups from your diet
  • Eating eggs, in large amounts, can cause constipation and flatulence

Conclusions

The Egg Diet is a crash diet, especially the version that does not allow for nutritional variety. There is a possibility that weight will be regained when you return to normal eating. Eating eggs alone is not a healthy way to lose weight, and the extreme version of this diet is very dangerous for your health.
