Shapely breasts go a long way in enhancing a woman’s physical appearance and enhanced physical appearance is known to boost self-confidence. This perhaps goes on to explain the rise in breast surgeries throughout the world. The most prominent breast surgery probably is breast lift surgery, undergone mostly by women in the age-group 35-60.
Breast Lift Surgery
In women, breast sagging is a part and parcel of ageing. The condition is medically known as ptosis and refers to drooping of breasts. It usually occurs due laxity of suspensory ligaments, superficial fascia and skin. It is an entirely natural process and depends on factors such as weight gain, weight loss and pregnancy, apart from gravity and ageing. The amount of sagging also depends on the size of the breasts. Larger breasts are more likely to sag than smaller breasts. Though the use of a supportive bra of the correct measurement goes a long way in preventing breast sagging, once sagging happens it becomes an irreversible process. This is where Mastopexy, or commonly known as breast lift surgery, comes for rescue.

What is Mastopexy?
Mastopexy is a surgical process meant to change the shape of a breast. It includes repositioning of the areola and nipple, removal of skin and lifting of breast tissue. Mastopexy may be carried out in combination with placement of breast implants to cause breast augmentation along with breast lift. However, if there is abundance of natural breast tissue breast augmentation is not performed.
Types of Mastopexy
There are three types of breast lift surgeries:
Crescent Mastopexy: In this case the nipple can be raised by 1-2 cm by using an incision around the top of the areolar border.
Binelli lift or Donut lift: it is a concentric mastopexy procedure which involvesincision around the outer border of the areola. In this process the nipple can be raised by 2-4 cms.
Vertical Mastopexy (Lollipop lift): This involves creating an incision of the shape of a lollipop around the outer border of the areola and then extending the incision towards the inframammary crease. The nipple can be raised to 6 cms by this procedure.
Full traditional Mastopexy (anchor lift): this is similar to vertical mastopexy, but the incision is anchor-shaped or inverted T-shaped and apart from extending the incision towards the inframammary crease it is also extended laterally and medially along the inframammary creae thereby lifting the nipple by up to 8 cms.
Disadvantages
Breast lift surgeries leave scar marks.
A breast lift surgery does not remove the chances of ptosis in future. It is only a temporary process and with ageing and gravity, sagging can set in again in a later stage of life.
There are potential surgical risks and complications involved and the end result depends on the deftness of the concerned surgeon.
It can take several months for your breasts to take the final shape and form.
