There are two types of arthritis.
Osteoarthritis – This is a degenerative condition that often occurs with age and causes stiffness and joint pain. The symptoms in overweight people can be worse due to heavier weight on the joints.
Rheumatoid arthritis – This is an inflammatory condition causing pain in multiple joints. Because of this, the joints swell and cause pain.
Nutrition to Relieve Arthritis Symptoms
- Oily fish – such as tuna, salmon, and sardines, cod liver oil supplements
- Fruit such as kiwi, peaches and oranges, which are rich in Vitamin C
- Vitamin E – Unsalted nuts
- Anti-inflammatory foods, such as turmeric and ginger
- Some report that a vegetarian diet is helpful
Foods That May Aggravate
- Some reports say vegetables from the solanum (or nightshade) family, such as potatoes, capsicums, eggplant, and tomatoes can cause problems
- Foods such as full-fat dairy, fatty meat, baked foods, which are high in saturated fats
- Dairy products
Finding What Helps You
Regularly monitor your diet. Always keep notes of what you have eaten, and what pain you experience. If you begin to notice joint pain the day after eating a certain food, then take the food out of your diet for a week, and see if you experience the same symptoms.
